This week, the Society of Community Health has been participating in the final validation of the Scope of Practice for Community Health Officers and Assistant Community Health Officers in Nairobi. The process has been supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), Ideal Health Organization, the Ministry of Health, the Kenya Health Professions Oversight Authority, and other key stakeholders, including institutions of higher learning and technical experts in the health field. For many years, Community Health Officers and Assistants have operated without a formally defined scope of practice. The validation of this framework marks a significant milestone and is expected to be a game changer once approved, providing clear mandates, professional direction, and a stronger foundation for improved and more effective service delivery.
